AI Search Is the Biggest Shift in SEO Since I Started in 2009. Here’s How US Businesses Should Respond
I started in SEO in 2009. Since then I’ve watched search go through several big shifts: the move away from link volume, the rise of mobile, local search and the map pack, and the growth of video. None of them changed the basics as much as what is happening now.
Search is turning from a list of links into an answer. Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity read the web, summarise it and recommend a handful of options. For a US business, the question is no longer just “do we rank?” but “are we the business the AI mentions?”
What is actually changing
- Fewer clicks for simple questions. When an AI answer satisfies the searcher, they may never visit a website.
- Shortlists instead of pages of results. AI assistants typically name a few businesses, not ten.
- Trust signals carry more weight. Assistants lean on sources that are consistent, well-cited and clearly authoritative.
- Questions are longer and more specific. People ask full questions, such as “which accountant in Austin works with restaurants?”, rather than typing two keywords.
What is not changing
Most AI search tools still rely on content that search engines can crawl and index. A technically sound site, clear service pages and a strong reputation remain the foundation. In my experience, businesses that did SEO well – useful content, honest reviews, consistent information – are best placed for AI search too.
Five things US businesses should do now
1. State clearly who you are and what you do
Your homepage and service pages should say plainly what you offer, who you serve and where. Add Organization or LocalBusiness schema so machines can read it reliably.
2. Answer real questions directly
Open each service page with a short, direct answer to the main question a customer asks, then go into detail. Add FAQs based on the questions your team actually hears.
3. Make your business information consistent everywhere
Your name, address, phone, hours and services should match across your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, industry directories and social profiles. Local SEO work like this feeds directly into AI answers about local businesses.
4. Earn mentions from trusted sources
Reviews, press coverage, industry associations and expert articles all tell AI systems that others vouch for you. Articles written by named experts with real credentials help as well.
5. Track your AI visibility
Every month, ask the main AI assistants the questions your customers would ask, and record whether you are mentioned and how you are described. It’s the simplest way to see whether your efforts are working.
Where this is heading
I don’t think traditional search is disappearing, but it is sharing attention with AI assistants, and that share is growing. The businesses that adapt early will be the ones those assistants learn to recommend.
