WordPress vs Shopify vs Custom Website: Which Is Right for Your Indian Business?
Choosing a platform is one of the first decisions when building a business website, and it is expensive to change later. For most Indian businesses the choice comes down to three options: WordPress, Shopify, or a custom-built site. Each is right for some businesses and wrong for others. Here is how we help clients decide.
WordPress: flexible and content-friendly
WordPress is open-source software you install on your own hosting. With WooCommerce it can also run an online store. We build most service-business and content-led sites on it – see our WordPress development services in Mumbai.
Strengths
- You own the site and the data, and can move hosts at any time.
- Excellent for blogs, service pages and SEO, with plugins such as Rank Math or Yoast.
- Thousands of themes and plugins, and a large pool of developers in India.
- Works with Indian payment gateways such as Razorpay, PayU and Cashfree through WooCommerce.
Watch-outs
- You are responsible for updates, backups and security, or need a maintenance plan.
- Too many plugins or a heavy theme can make the site slow.
Shopify: the fastest route to selling online
Shopify is a hosted e-commerce platform. You pay a monthly subscription and Shopify handles hosting, security and checkout.
Strengths
- Quick to launch a store, with inventory, orders and shipping built in.
- Hosting, security and updates are handled for you.
- A large app ecosystem, including Indian payment and shipping integrations.
Watch-outs
- Monthly fees, plus app subscriptions and possible transaction fees, add up over time.
- Less flexible for content-heavy sites and complex custom features.
- Moving away later means rebuilding the site on another platform.
Custom development: when your requirements are unique
A custom site is built from scratch with a framework such as Laravel, Next.js or Django. It makes sense when the website is really a product: a booking platform, a portal with user logins, a marketplace, or deep integration with your ERP or CRM.
Strengths
- Built exactly around your workflow, with no plugin limitations.
- Can scale and perform well when engineered properly.
Watch-outs
- Higher upfront cost and longer build time.
- You depend on developers for every change, so documentation and code ownership matter.
Which one should you choose?
- Service business, clinic, consultant, B2B company or agency: WordPress. You need strong pages, a blog and local SEO more than complex features.
- Product brand selling online with a standard catalogue: Shopify, or WordPress with WooCommerce if content and SEO are central to your growth plan.
- Platform, portal or app-like website: custom development.
Questions to ask before you decide
- Who will update the site day to day, and how technical are they?
- Will content and SEO be a major source of leads?
- Do you need features that no theme or app provides?
- What is your budget for the first year, including subscriptions and maintenance, not just the build?
- Who will own the domain, hosting, code and admin logins?
Frequently asked questions
Is WordPress good for SEO?
Yes. WordPress gives you full control over page titles, URLs, headings and schema, and SEO plugins make this easy. Speed depends on your theme, plugins and hosting.
Can I move from Shopify to WordPress later?
Yes, but it is a migration project: products, customers, orders and URLs need to be moved and redirected carefully to keep your rankings.
How long does it take to build a business website?
A typical service-business WordPress site takes a few weeks from approved content to launch. Online stores and custom builds take longer, depending on features and integrations.
Whatever platform you choose, insist on owning your domain and admin access, and build with SEO in mind from day one – fixing it after launch costs more. If you’re not sure which fits, talk to us and we’ll recommend one based on your plans, not on what we prefer to build.
